Seasonal Worker Visa Demand Again Likely to Exceed Supply

Seasonal businesses that rely on temporary foreign labor are going to feel the crunch again this year.

The Department of Labor received some 4,500 applications covering 81,600 jobs for H-2B seasonal guestworker visas on Jan. 1, 2018. The applications—filed the first day employers were allowed to do so—are for work starting April 1, the second half of fiscal year 2018.

Only 33,000 visas are available for that time period. Businesses used up all 33,000 visas available between Oct. 1, 2017, and March 31, 2018, as of Dec. 21. Historically there’s been more demand for the visas in the spring and ...
