School Desegregation, Age Bias Measures Advance in House Panel

The House Education and Labor Committee voted to approve four bills, including two measures to advance desegregation and equity in schools.

  • One bill advanced by 27-19 (H.R. 729) would authorize school diversity grants
  • A second measure approved 27-19 (H.R. 730) would give parents and students the right to challenge discriminatory school practices in court under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act; the House passed both bills last fall but the Senate, then GOP-led, didn’t take them up
