San Francisco Laid-off Workers Get Permanent Rehire Rights

San Francisco’s proposal to make permanent workers’ rights to reclaim their jobs after being laid off because of the pandemic was approved Tuesday and now heads to the city’s mayor.

The Board of Supervisors on a 10-1 vote approved the “Back to Work” ordinance. The protections, already in place under an emergency ordinance originally passed last summer, require rehiring workers in order of seniority. The ordinance would expire in a year from the effective date or when the state of emergency terminates, whichever is later.

Mayor London Breed hasn’t yet said whether she’ll sign the business-opposed measure. Breed let...
