Pitt Basketball Strength Coach’s Job Bias Suit Ends in Mistrial

A federal judge has declared a mistrial in the race and age discrimination lawsuit brought by a former University of Pittsburgh women’s basketball strength and conditioning coach.

The US District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania said Monday that the jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict on Timothy Beltz’s claims. Beltz alleged that his firing after nearly 19 years at the university was spurred by his being White and 46 years old at the time, while Pitt argued it terminated the entire staffs of its women’s and men’s basketball teams after hiring new head coaches.
