Party On! Worker Safety Incentive Rewards OK, Feds Say

Pizza parties and cash bonuses are back as federally approved incentives for employers with workplace safety programs.

An Oct. 11 announcement by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration reversing safety incentive programs guidelines issued during the Obama presidency reopens the door for employers to reward employees for low workplace injury rates with bonuses and celebrations.

However, the new guidance doesn’t end employers’ calls for OSHA to withdraw the Obama-era rule the interpretation covers (29 C.F.R. 1904.35). The rule allows the agency to penalize employers for incentive programs that OSHA concludes discourage reporting injuries and illnesses, even if no worker complained. ...
