Oversight Chair Still Up in Air on Federal `Ban the Box’ Bill

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), the chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, hasn’t determined whether he supports a bill to ban the federal government from inquiring about criminal history on job applications.

“I’m in a very unusual spot among members of Congress, which is that I haven’t made up my mind,” Gowdy said during a Dec. 13 hearing that explored whether “ban the box” policies help former inmates and other people with criminal histories get jobs.
