New NYC Law Limits Fast Food Worker Layoffs and Firings (1)

New York City fast-food workers will have union-style protections against firings and layoffs under two new ordinances signed into law by Mayor Bill de Blasio.

The ordinances will limit the ability of fast-food restaurants to terminate workers’ employment, requiring them to show legitimate economic reasons for layoffs or “just cause” related to job performance for firings.

Signed by the Democratic mayor on Tuesday, the new laws take effect in 180 days. New York’s City Council passed them on Dec. 17.
