NLRB Stops Mail-Ballot Union Election at Upper Michigan Hospital

The National Labor Relations Board halted a union election for nurses and house supervisors at a hospital in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula that was to be conducted by mail because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The board’s Republican majority granted Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital’s bid to pause the election and consider whether an NLRB regional director abused her discretion by ordering a mail-in vote to determine whether the workers would choose Michigan Nurses Association as their bargaining representative.

The three GOP members didn’t explain their Aug. 25 decision beyond saying the hospital’s appeal raised “substantial issues warranting review.” The panel’s lone Democrat,...
