NLRB Approves Company Handbook That Differs From Union Contract

A divided National Labor Relations Board blessed a medical waste firm’s distribution of a company handbook that was inconsistent with elements of its union contract.

The NLRB’s 2-1 ruling Wednesday reversed an administrative law judge’s September decision that Stericycle Inc. violated its legal duty to give an International Brotherhood of Teamsters affiliate a chance to bargain over the handbook provisions.

The company didn’t say it was changing terms of employment from its collective bargaining agreement, nor did it claim that the handbook would supersede that labor deal with the Teamsters, the board said.
