New York State Democrats Push for Bereavement Leave, Again

The New York state Legislature will once again debate whether bereavement leave should be covered under the state’s paid family and medical leave program.

Sen. Jessica Ramos (D) re-introduced a bill (S. 4694) March 21 that would expand the state’s existing paid family leave law to give workers who’ve experienced the death of a child, spouse, domestic partner, parent, grandparent, or grandchild 12 weeks of leave.

Nearly identical legislation was passed last year by the Legislature but ultimately vetoed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D).
