New York City Probation Officers Allege Race, Sex Discrimination

New York City’s Department of Probation implemented policies and practices to reduce probation officer compensation in response to the growing number of women and non-white individuals holding the job, a lawsuit filed by a union and five individuals claims.

“Prior to these demographic changes, the salary ranges and benefits more appropriately reflected the value of the job,” the lawsuit alleges.

The would-be class alleges that probation officers are paid at the lower end of a discretionary scale and that their salaries have stagnated, despite growing workloads and increasing responsibilities. They claim New York has eliminated opportunities for promotion and advancement...
