NCAA, Universities Fire Back at Student-Athlete Wage Claims

Student-athletes aren’t employees of their schools and paying them would destroy the college sports industry, the National Collegiate Athletic Association and 25 Division I universities argued in federal court.

The student-athletes are amateurs, and that long-standing tradition is central to the college sports enterprise, the defendants argue in two separate briefs filed Monday. The revenue generated by college sports isn’t relevant to whether they’re employees under federal law, they say.
