Musicians, California Lawmakers Strike Deal on Gig Worker Law

Professional songwriters, recording engineers, and others in the music business could see employment restrictions under California’s A.B. 5 law loosened under a proposed deal between the industry and state legislators.

California Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez (D), author of A.B. 5, announced a plan Friday that would allow more flexibility in hiring freelance musicians for live performances and recordings.

The law, which set a stricter standard for determining who is an employee under California’s worker-protection laws and who is an independent contractor, has met opposition from some freelancers.
