Mine Workers Walk Off the Job in Arizona, Texas

About 2,000 hourly mining and metal processing workers are on strike at ASARCO, a copper mining, smelting, and refinery company based in Tucson, Ariz.

The workers simultaneously walked off the job at four Arizona facilities and an Amarillo, Texas, facility at 1 a.m. CDT Oct. 14 after they rejected a “last, best and, final” four-year contract offer from the company.

The United Steelworkers, along with nine other unions representing ASARCO workers, canceled an extension agreement with the company after a membership vote Oct. 11.
