Michigan Road Projects Snarled During Contract Stalemate

A game of chicken between a Michigan contractors’ group and a union that represents road workers has caught the attention of a top state lawmaker.

Since Sept. 4, the Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association has held a “defensive lockout” of workers in Operating Engineers Local 324, which represents thousands of heavy equipment operators, technicians, and road workers.

The stalemate is delaying construction projects throughout the Wolverine State, where politicians have made fixing the roads a rallying cry in the gubernatorial and other legislative races.
