Medical OK to Return to Work Now Common, Backed by EEOC (1)

The coronavirus pandemic has inspired a number of companies to adopt new protocols requiring employees to obtain medical sign-off before returning to work—moves that under ordinary circumstances would clash with laws forbidding disability discrimination.

A survey employment law firm Seyfarth Shaw released Thursday found that 70 percent of more than 550 U.S. companies indicated they were requiring medical approvals for their workers to return to work, “despite government concerns about overtaxing already busy medical offices with such authorizations.”

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s guidelines, updated Wednesday, validate that precaution as well as others that some companies are taking. The ...
