Machinists Must Redo Elections, DOL Rules

The International Association of Machinists must hold new elections in January for leadership positions as part of an agreement reached with the DOL, the union said Aug. 15.

The union reached a voluntary agreement after the Labor Department found issues regarding the eligibility of candidates for top union seats, including IAM President Bob Martinez. The Machinists agreed to a DOL-supervised rerun election after the agency contested the IAM’s requirements that candidates for Grand Lodge office show a minimal level of support in the union’s local offices before becoming candidates, the Machinists said in a statement.
