Let Green Card Seekers’ Spouses Keep Working, Lawmakers Say

The Department of Homeland Security should keep in place a program to provide work permits to the spouses of skilled workers stuck in the green card backlog, a bipartisan group of 130 House members say.

The lawmakers’ May 16 letter to DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen touts the economic benefits of the 2015 regulation creating the program. The majority of those in the program are women, and revoking their work permits will widen the existing gender inequality gap, the letter adds.

The effort is being led by Reps. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) and Mia Love (R-Utah).
