The city of Los Angeles filed lawsuits Jan. 8 against three major port trucking companies, alleging they intentionally misclassify hundreds of drivers to avoid providing certain employment benefits and paying taxes.
CMI Transportation LLC, K&R Transportation California LLC, and Cal Cartage Transportation Express LLC misclassify employees as independent contractors to exploit workers and increase profits, Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer said in announcing the lawsuits. Feuer said that, to his knowledge, this is the first action his office has filed involving allegedly misclassified port truck drivers.
