Justices Decline Cosmetology Student Salon Work Wage Lawsuit

The U.S. Supreme Court won’t hear a case about the proper standard for deciding whether vocational training programs and internships create employment relationships under the Fair Labor Standards Act, the justices said Monday.

Joy Eberline, Tracy Poxson, and Cindy Zimmermann attended licensed cosmetology schools operated by Douglas J. Institute Inc. and its affiliates. Each school operates a clinic salon where students work towards Michigan’s 965-hour practical experience licensing requirement. The students are graded for their work in the salon.
