Iowa Trucking Bill Hints at Red-State Pushback on Worker Status

An Iowa bill that’s ready for the governor to sign into law would protect the trucking industry’s model of classifying drivers who own their trucks as independent contractors—the latest case of industry-friendly pushback against worker classification overhauls such as California’s A.B. 5.

The California law, enacted in 2019, required reclassifying thousands of truckers, Uber and Lyft drivers, freelancers, and other independent workers as employees. Such a classification change provides new worker protections and imposes employer obligations related to workers’ compensation, unemployment insurance, minimum wage, and overtime pay requirements.
