Illinois County Jail Officers Advance Unpaid Covid Cleaning Suit

Cook County, Ill., and its sheriff must face a lawsuit filed by correctional officers who say they spent additional unpaid time before and after shifts conducting Covid-19-related cleaning, a federal court said.

Officers at the Cook County Department of Corrections say they spent up to 30 minutes before and after shifts starting in March 2020 engaged in such activities as washing hands, sanitizing uniforms, and preparing personal protective equipment.

Officers worked in close proximity to other employees and detainees, and frequently were assigned to oversee quarantined detainees who had tested positive for Covid-19, they allege.
