ID Checks on Jobless Aid Must Be Clear, Timely, DOL Tells States

State unemployment agencies investigating potentially fraudulent claims must provide understandable written notice to claimants and make a timely decision whether to pause payments, under new federal Labor Department guidance.

The issue of identity verification has bedeviled state agencies over the past year, as the large volume of unemployment claims during the Covid-19 pandemic attracted scammers who have bilked the nation’s jobless aid programs of potentially billions of dollars. Some of them last month petitioned U.S. Labor Secretary Marty Walsh for help.
