House Passes LGBT Rights Bill, but Next Steps in Senate Unclear

The House today passed legislation that would ban LGBT discrimination at work and in a wide range of other situations, sending the measure to the Senate where it faces an uncertain fate.

The Equality Act (H.R. 5, S. 788) would prohibit sexual orientation and gender identity bias on the job and by public accommodation providers such as hotels, restaurants, and health-care facilities. The vote came as the U.S. Supreme Court is set to consider whether a federal ban on sex discrimination on the job already prohibits LGBT bias.
