Hazard Pay Plans Could Outlast Virus With Push in Congress

No laws require businesses to provide “hazard pay” for employees, with few union contracts even mentioning the extra wages. But now workers deemed essential during the pandemic are asking for premium pay—and the call is gaining support from both sides of the aisle.

Growing Approval: President Donald Trump said he is open to the idea of hazard pay for health care workers, as Democratic lawmakers like Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Ro Khanna call for several premium pay proposals. Hazard pay policies could be long-lasting once they’re established, some attorneys say.
