Greyhound Settles EEOC’s Religious Garb Suit for Muslim Driver

Greyhound Lines Inc. will pay $45,000 and beef up its job accommodations process to end an EEOC lawsuit alleging it discriminated against a Sunni Muslim driver because of her religious clothing, Maryland federal court record show.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission said in a June 2019 lawsuit that the bias occurred during Aliyah Hadith’s training, when she was told she couldn’t wear a full-length abaya—an untucked, loose-fitting shirt-like garment—while working, resulting in her constructive discharge. That violated Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the suit said.
