Government Evades Contempt Over Asylum Seeker Work Permit Delays

A federal district court declined to hold US Citizenship and Immigration Services in contempt after months of worsening compliance with requirements that the agency issue decisions on asylum seekers’ work permit requests within 30 days.

Plaintiffs in the case, who include asylum seekers with work permit requests pending past the 30-day timeline, filed a contempt motion in the US District Court for the Western District of Washington in August after the share of cases adjudicated in that time frame dropped to 4.4%.
