Florida Man Surpasses $3 Million in Federal Safety Fines

A Florida contractor already facing federal contempt charges for more than $2 million in unpaid worker safety fines, got more bad news—OSHA cited him for an additional $1 million in proposed penalties.

The two roofing companies operated by Travis Slaughter of Jacksonville—Florida Roofing Experts Inc. and Great White Construction Inc.—amassed the penalties following 19 inspections beginning in 2012.

OSHA disclosed the most recent fines on Tuesday. The fines cover three residential construction inspections conducted in July. At each site, OSHA inspectors said they saw atop homes Florida Roofing employees who weren’t using fall protection gear.
