More than 500 Chicago charter school teachers walked off the job Dec. 4, launching the first strike in U.S. history targeting the charter school movement.

The Chicago Teachers Union, representing educators at 15 schools operated by Acero Charter Schools, called a strike after a lengthy bargaining session broke off shortly after midnight without a settlement.

About 536 educators and paraprofessionals began hoisting picket signs at 6:30 a.m., forcing Acero to cancel classes for 7,500 Chicago Public Schools students.
