Family Leave Bill Would Give California Workers 12 Weeks Off

California could soon mandate up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for most of the state’s workforce, including those caring for a family member with Covid-19, after lawmakers passed a far-reaching bill Monday.

The Assembly voted for final approval of the bill (SB 1383) late Monday, minutes before the midnight deadline to pass bills this session. The Senate approved the measure in July. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has until Sept. 30 to act on the bill, which would take effect on Jan. 1, 2021.
