Ex-Union Members Can Still Be Bound to Pay Dues, 9th Cir. Says

Washington state workers’ union membership agreement lawfully bound them to pay union dues for nearly a year after they quit the union, a federal appeals court in San Francisco has ruled.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit on Wednesday threw out a proposed class action that state workers filed against an affiliate of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and the state of Washington, ruling that the workers didn’t have a constitutional right to not pay what they agreed to pay.

The lawsuit was backed by the Freedom Foundation, a conservative advocacy group. ...
