ERA Ratification Suits Draw Wide Support and Pointed Opposition

With proponents pushing for a long-sought victory, the legal battle over ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment has drawn support from major U.S. businesses, mayors, state attorneys general, religious groups, and legal scholars, but also opposition from the U.S. Department of Justice and some women’s groups.

More than a dozen amicus briefs have been filed in parallel lawsuits pending in Boston and Washington federal courts. Plaintiffs in both cases argue the federal government must certify the amendment, which would create the constitutional requirement of equal treatment under the law for women.
