DOL Rule on Religious Contractor Shields Clears White House

The White House’s regulatory office cleared a Labor Department final rule on discrimination liability shields for religious contractors that has stoked the ongoing clash between religious freedom and LGBT rights.

The DOL’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs initially proposed the rule in August 2019. It would codify some existing exemptions for federal contractors who are religious entities, while also extending them to “closely held” companies where a small number of business owners own the majority of shares. The “closely held” companies would only be covered by the rule if their employment decisions are based on their religious beliefs. ...
