Defense, Health, Earmarks Boosted in $1.5 Trillion Spending Bill

Defense and public health spending would get a boost and earmarks would return after a decade-long absence under a $1.5 trillion government funding package released early Wednesday, which lawmakers hope to enact by Friday night to avoid a shutdown.

Congress will need to send the funding package (H.R. 2471) or a short-term stopgap to the president’s desk by Friday to fund the government by that night’s deadline. The package includes 12 annual funding bills, plus $13.6 billion for aid to Ukraine and $15.6 billion for Covid-19 relief.
