D.C. Employers to Begin Paying Into Paid Leave Fund July 1

Employers in the District of Columbia will start paying into a fund to provide paid family and medical leave to full- and part-time workers July 1, under a measure that passed nearly three years ago.

The Universal Paid Leave Amendment Act of 2016 requires private-sector employers in the District to provide employees with eight weeks of paid parental leave, six weeks of paid leave to care for sick relatives, and two weeks of paid personal sick leave. Employees won’t have access to the paid leave fund until July 1, 2020.
