Columbia University Moves Closer to Bargaining With Grad Workers

Columbia University officials will recognize and bargain with unionized graduate students and postdoctoral workers, if the workers accept 10 bargaining terms, the school announced Nov. 19.

Columbia President Lee Bollinger and Provost John Coatsworth outlined the conditions in the announcement, which include a promise to begin bargaining by Feb. 26 if the grad workers approve the terms. Unionized workers must also agree not to strike before April 6, 2020, the school said. The conditions are part of a framework the New York City school reached with representatives of the United Auto Workers, which currently represents the workers.
