Columbia University Graduate Union Approved 2-1 by Labor Board

The federal labor board approved a vote to join a union by graduate student assistants at Columbia University in New York.

The university challenged the election results, but the National Labor Relations Board ruled 2-1 on Dec. 18 that there was no basis to rerun the election.

The board had said in a landmark 2016 decision that the graduate student teaching assistants and researchers had the right to unionize under federal labor law as Columbia employees. That decision, which could get another look once Republicans regain a board majority, sparked organizing drives on campuses across the country, including Washington University...
