Columbia Graduate Students Begin Strike (1)

Columbia University graduate students hit the picket lines April 24 for the start of what’s expected to be a six-day strike.

The work stoppage on the New York campus comes after the school’s administration didn’t recognize or bargain with a nearly 3,000-member unit of graduate workers. The union threatened a strike last week if the school didn’t begin negotiating before 10 a.m. April 24.

It seems the battle will continue for the long term, given that the university maintains it won’t recognize teaching and research assistants as Columbia employees and will pursue a higher court’s input on the issue.
