Californians to Decide Whether to Bring Back Affirmative Action

California voters will decide this fall whether to reverse a decades-old ban on race- and gender-based preferences in college admissions, state employment, and public contracting.

The state Senate on Wednesday passed a proposed constitutional amendment (ACA 5) 30–10, one day before Thursday’s deadline to qualify such measures for the Nov. 3 general election ballot. At least two-thirds of the chamber, 26 senators, were needed to approve the measure. One Republican, Sen. Scott Wilk, voted with Democrats. The Assembly approved the proposed constitutional amendment with more than the required two-thirds majority on June 10.
