Family leave benefits will no longer be limited to legal relatives under a bill that California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed late Thursday .
The “chosen family” law (A.B. 1041) was introduced last year at the height of the Covid pandemic. It aims to help those with few family members available to care for them when they get sick, by letting a friend take up to 12 weeks of job-protected leave. LGBTQ people are among those who will benefit the most from the law, Assemblymember Buffy Wicks (D), the bill’s author, said.
