Calif. Lawmakers Won’t Take Up Question of Who Is an Employee (1)

The California Legislature won’t act anytime soon in response to a recent state Supreme Court ruling that makes it harder for businesses to classify workers as independent contractors, State Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon said.

The state’s highest court in April adopted a three-part “ABC test” that assumes a worker is an employee under state law unless three conditions are satisfied. The ruling came in a case involving delivery service Dynamex Operations West. It replaced an older test that weighed about a dozen factors.
