Black Educator’s ‘White Fragility’ Talk Fuels Firing Bias Suit

California’s Contra Costa Community College District must face race discrimination claims by the former head of its program assisting high school students in danger of dropping out, who was fired after facilitating a discussion among co-workers about “institutional racism,” a federal judge in San Francisco ruled.

Karl Debro, who is Black, centered the May 2019 talk during a joint instructional and student services personnel meeting around Robin DiAngelo’s book “White Fragility.” Two subordinates, both White, filed race bias complaints with the district about 10 days later, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California said.
