Asylum Seekers Snagged by Wait Times for Work Authorization

Thousands of asylum seekers in the US have waited months or more for work permits, despite a regulatory requirement that their applications be processed within 30 days.

The share of applications processed in that 30-day time frame has dropped from more than 90% in February to 4.4% in July, according to data US Citizenship and Immigration Services provided in response to litigation over the work permit delays. That dropoff followed a February court ruling that vacated two Trump administration rules restricting asylum seekers’ access to employment authorization documents.
