Arizona Appeals for Power to Penalize Flagstaff’s $15 Wage Law

Arizona is appealing a court order blocking its attempt to impose $1.1 million in penalties on the city of Flagstaff for adopting a $15-per-hour minimum wage law.

Maricopa County Superior Court Judge James Smith temporarily barred the legislatively imposed sanction on Oct. 8. Attorneys for the state docketed their notice of appeal on Oct. 16.

This is the first year Arizona’s legislature has applied a law enacted in 2019 that allows assessments to withhold or recover state funding from cities with minimum wages higher than the state’s minimum.
