Amazon Worker Advances Some N.J. Security-Check Pay Class Claims

Amazon.com Inc. must face a warehouse worker’s proposed class claims seeking pay for time spent undergoing security screenings at the end of shifts, but not for ones conducted during meal breaks, a New Jersey federal judge ruled.

The post-shift security screenings are compensable because New Jersey wage law doesn’t incorporate the federal Portal-to-Portal Act, Chief Judge Freda L. Wolfson of the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey said Monday.

The New Jersey Supreme Court hasn’t yet addressed the issue, but Wolfson predicted it would reach that conclusion.
