Algorithmic Bias on Tech Platforms Targeted in Democratic Bill

Algorithms behind online platforms would be prohibited from discriminating against their users under a legislative proposal from a pair of Democrats in Congress.

The bill, introduced by Sen. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) in the Senate and Rep. Doris Matsui (D-Calif.) in the House, is meant to provide transparency and root out issues with automated decisions over what users see online that have led to accusations of discrimination in areas such as housing and job advertisements.

The Algorithmic Justice and Online Platform Transparency Act would ban algorithmic discrimination on the basis of race, age, gender, ability, and other protected characteristics. Platforms ...
