Alaska Flight Attendants Lose on Faith Bias Claims Against Union

Two former Alaska Airlines Inc. flight attendants who were fired after opposing legislation that would add sexual orientation and gender identity as protected classes to federal law saw their state religious discrimination claims against their union dismissed.

Marli Brown and Lacey Smith’s discrimination claims brought under Washington and Oregon law against the Association of Flight Attendants are preempted by federal law, the US District Court for the Western District of Washington ruled. The court didn’t rule on the plaintiffs’ claims under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
