AFL-CIO Executive Council Will Meet Aug. 20 to Pick New Leader

The governing body of the AFL-CIO will meet Aug. 20 to select a replacement to serve out the final months of late President Richard Trumka’s term, a federation spokesman said Monday.

Trumka, 72, died unexpectedly at a family event Aug. 5. Under the AFL-CIO constitution, if a president dies the secretary-treasurer must convene the federation’s executive council to elect a replacement. The winner of that contest will have to compete for a full four-year term at the federation’s convention in June 2022.
