$20 Million More Sought for California Worker Classification Law

Two California Assembly members are calling on Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) to include an additional $20 million in his budget to help arts nonprofits comply with the state’s new employee classification law.

Assembly Members Lorena Gonzalez (D) and Christy Smith (D) asked for the funding to help nonprofit arts groups comply with A.B. 5, the state law that redefines how employers can classify employees and contractors. Newsom’s proposed budget for 2020-2021 already includes $21.6 million to implement and enforce A.B. 5, which went into effect in January.
