USAA Avoids Class Claims for Damages, Must Face Injunction Class

USAA Casualty Insurance Co. policyholders can’t proceed as a class on their claims for damages allegedly caused by the company’s claims processing practices, a federal court in Montana ruled.

Individual questions about why each claim was denied would overwhelm the litigation, the court said.

But it allowed the policyholders to pursue as a class their claims for a change in business practices.

The plaintiffs estimate the class includes hundreds of USAA members in Montana.

The suit alleges USAA improperly administered medical payment insurance benefits and wrongfully denied coverage to Montana consumers.
